Gaillard

Strength and modernity

The city of Gaillard is the heir of the prestigious Château-Gaillard or Chastel-Gaillard, a creation of the Counts of Geneva in the 13th century. The castle and its fortified town played a strategic role in the Middle Ages and the religious wars of the time were fatal to this stronghold.
Located halfway between Annemasse and Geneva, Gaillard covers a little more than 400 hectares and presents two complementary aspects. On the one hand, a rural area, in the Arve plain, with 70 hectares devoted to an important market gardening and horticultural activity, the production of which is mainly sent to Switzerland. On the other hand, there is an urban area on the plateau, which today has nearly 12,000 inhabitants of more than 110 nationalities. The municipality also hosts an economic activity zone in La Châtelaine, where companies with more than 50 employees are grouped together. There are about 80 shops, mainly located along the Rue de Genève. Three hotel residences and three hotels complete the commercial equipment of the city.
