Located at the crossroads of the roads, the commune of Vers would take its name from a Roman citizen, Vernus, whose vast villa was built at the place called “Bracosson”, close to the Roman road linking Geneva to Seyssel at that time. Today, this peaceful rural commune of 591 hectares offers its 893 inhabitants, spread over the villages of Vers, Maison Neuve and Bellossy, a preserved natural environment, while being located a few kilometers from towns and cities (Valleiry, Viry, Saint-Julien-en-Genevois, Geneva) offering a wide choice of shops and services.
If most of the inhabitants work outside the village, Vers nevertheless has a few shops (inn, bakery, hairdresser, wellness and beauty center), as well as farms and craftsmen. And the municipality has recently renovated its town hall, which in 2018 became the first positive energy public building in the territory of the Communauté de Communes du Genevois.
The municipality is a fan of “soft” tourism and offers walkers several hiking trails marked out by the Syndicat Intercommunal du Vuache. Among these, the mythical path of Saint-Jacques de Compostelle, which passes on the heights of Vers and has made more than one hiker dream! The commune also has some architectural treasures such as its neo-gothic style church with its bulbous bell tower, rather rare in the region, or its chapel, dedicated to Notre-Dame-des-Voyageurs. The promontory of this chapel also offers a sumptuous panorama of Geneva and Lake Geneva.
