“You don’t have to travel far. The unbelievable is very close to home.”
A writer
Dominique Ernst has been exploring the local legends for over 20 years. Originally from Geneva, he grew up in Monnetier, a village located between Petit and Grand-Salève. He later moved to Vers and this is where his writing work began. At first, this was as an elected official of his municipality, and then as a news correspondent.
Gradually, Dominique Ernst discovered the region’s rich history and decided to write about it. The Dauphiné Libéré offered him the opportunity to do a series of articles on local legends based on Le Salève and Le Vuache, but the material he found far exceeded what was needed. The astonishing tales of Genevans living in the Haute-Savoie became the subject of many books written by the author. With his captivating stories, the writer shows that we’re always surrounded by astonishing tales and legends wherever we are in the Monts du Genevois.
about local history
The wild Vuache and its unusual tales, Le Salève and its many famous visitors…without having to go far, the unbelievable is always close at hand. This is the leitmotiv running through Dominique Ernst’s books which seek to introduce the phenomenal historical wealth of the region to the people of Haute-Savoie – both to those who are local and those who have adopted it as their own.
He isn’t a historian or a writer by trade. He’s above all passionate and persevering. Enthused by history and writing and a fan of his region, he carried out some meticulous work. He rummaged through the archives in Geneva and the Haute-Savoie, and closely studied old newspapers, revealing stories and legends handed down through the generations – but that’s not all!
Whether told orally or written down, the region’s legends are prone to alteration. “A dozen different versions of every legend exist.” His work also involved trying to ‘clean up’ these legends and compare them with the historical facts in order to try to get back to the untainted, original version.
In November 2021, the book “Le Salève de A à Z : dictionnaire d’une montagne modeste et géniale” by Dominique Ernst was published by Slatkine.
20 years have resulted in a book which is without doubt the most complete work ever written about Le Salève.
With 320 pages, 250 notices and 50 illustrations covering both known and unpublished stories, it’s an outstanding body of work about this unique mountain.
