AWARENESSS

Born and bred in the Haute-Savoie, Jean-Marc Peutet loves his native region. Despite his extensive travels, the Haute-Savoie has always been home. But Jean-Marc was not always a mountain guide. It was in 2016 that he decided to quit his career to embark on a very different career path, in the mountains. Jean-Marc had grown up in and with the mountains, living and breathing skiing, paragliding, canyoning and hiking. And, ultimately, it was this inherent connection with the mountains that led him to retrain and obtain a professional qualification so as to make a living from his passion. His work and involvement in a number of organisations bring Jean-Marc in close contact with the environment. And protecting this environment is a matter very dear to his heart. As Chair of the Natura 2000 des Voirons nature reserve, a facilitator at Chablais Geopark and an elected member of the Saint-Cergues environmental committee, he is a key player in the region in nature conservation.

Jean-Marc works at Maison de la Montagne des Voirons in Fillinges, a mountain guide association on the edge of the Natura 2000 reserve. The association is based in a house purchased and owned by his partner, Luc Tarantola. This is where Jean-Marc runs his mountain activities from, sharing his expertise with the Vallée Verte Bureau des Guides, a team of local mountain guides.

IN THE MOUNTAINS

To make their association make a difference, Jean-Marc and Luc are transforming the grounds of Maison de la Montagne des Voirons into a welcoming home for protected biodiversity, creating a new biotope from the existing ecosystem in which plants and animals such as orchids and the little owl flourish. To help promote the soft development of the mountains as a tourist destination, Maison de la Montagne des Voirons is diversifying the services it offers. Jean-Marc and Luc are planning to welcome hikers looking for a pit-stop to recharge their batteries with light refreshments made from local produce. This new service is set to launch in the next few months.

Jean-Marc has found his true vocation as a mountain guide and thrives on raising awareness among adults and children alike of the importance of preserving our fragile mountain environments. He offers a series of themed walks centred on for example prehistory, geology or aquatic environments, and adapts these so that they are suitable and fun for children. He is especially keen to share his knowledge with this particular audience, because it is the generations of tomorrow who will in turn apply and pass on this knowledge to help preserve the future of the mountains.

Jean-Marc runs summit walks all year round: in snowshoes in winter and hiking boots in summer in Haute-Savoie, Switzerland and Italy, and as guided treks in La Réunion in autumn. Jean-Marc is a great guy who is passionate about his job and loves to engage his audience and share his knowledge of nature. He lives a simple life with his hobbies, which have become his profession, in a region rich in unspoilt nature that he enjoys helping hikers discover.
