Over the years, the history of the Tour de France has become intimately linked to that of our territory.
While the Tour was created in 1903 by the Journal l’Auto, it was in 1911 that it first took to the roads of our department. The 344-kilometer stage linked Chamonix to Grenoble.
In 1974, the strong man of the Tour is Eddy Merckx. The Belgian rider has already won the big loop 4 times and aims for a 5th success. But on July 8, between Gaillard and Aix-les-Bains, it was during the ascent of Mont-du-Chat (Savoie) that Raymond Poulidor launched hostilities in a pass that the Tour riders crossed for the first time. A pass that had escaped the recognition of Eddy Merckx.
On July 20, 1983, it is Jacques Michaud, the child of the country, a native of Saint Julien-en-Genevois who won a stage between the Alpes d’Huez and Morzine. That day, he won after a solo effort of more than 60 km.
In 2004, it was from Annemasse that stage 18 of the Tour de France started for the first time. The riders had to travel 166.5 km to reach Lons-le-Saunier.
Year after year, the Tour de France continues to explore new routes. It was in 2018 that the Grande Boucle took the climb up the Plateau des Glières, a high place of resistance, for the first time.
For its 110th edition, the Tour de France remains fascinated by our territory. Cyclists from all over the world continue to set out to assault the mythical passes of our department. They set out to tame the most difficult passages, such as the Col de Joux Plane or the Col de la Croix Fry. Mythical passes as fascinating as they are scary.
This course will allow to (re)discover our marvellous landscapes, our lakes and our mountains, supports of sporting exploits, and to make dream a billion people, thanks to a retransmission on the television channels in the whole world!
It is unlikely that the runners will enjoy the view of Lake Geneva at the start of the race, as the 4,200 meters of cumulative climb will be on everyone’s mind, especially the climbs to the Ramaz and Joux Plane passes. Everyone is also aware that they will need to be skilled at descending to reach Morzine as a winner.
At the end of a demanding weekend, the stage is set for an explanation between leaders. The particularly rhythmic tour of the Haute-Savoie will take the riders to the Col de la Forclaz de Montmin, then to the Croix Fry and the Aravis. The most severe blows will probably be dealt on the final climb to Le Bettex in the Côte des Amerands, where some passages reach 17% gradient.
The only time trial of the 2023 edition is characterized both by its short distance and by its advantageous profile for climbers who feel comfortable in solitary exercise. The famous Domancy climb is on the day’s program. However, it is an opportunity for the one who will start in yellow to assert his superiority or for his rivals to launch the reconquest that could last all week.
The stage will be a great challenge, with more than 5,000 meters of vertical drop to be absorbed or exploited throughout the day. In the final stage, it will consist of revisiting the impressive Col de la Loze before plunging into Courchevel, where there will be a battle on the altiport’s 18% gradient track.
This summer, the Tour de France will stop in Haute-Savoie.
19 years after its last passage, the professional cyclists will once again set off from Annemasse to Morzine on the 14th stage. A stage that promises to be exciting!
